Recent research by Dr. Muanza DIA Kand supports a novel aid delivery approach that gets rid of transporting food to the impoverished, since the supply chain infrastructure costs use up to 50% of the donations just moving the food. In the alternative, Dr. Kand recommends giving the impoverished mobile phones and transfer funds to them via apps on the phone that can receive and expend money.

The supported people receive funds on their phone, then go to their local markets where vendors have the same app (in the US we have one called Venmo) to receive payments in exchange for the food and supplies being purchased. For more on this important topic, visit Dr. Kand’s Community of Practice website.
