Dr. Lt. Col. Matthew Ayawine is a serving Senior Officer of the Ghana Armed Forces with over 2 decades of service in the military. He has held several appointments, principal among which is a Directing Staff/Lecturer in the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and Deputy Command Logistics Officer in Headquarters Northern/Central Commands of the Ghana Army. He has also served as a Platoon Commander, Adjutant, Second in Command as well as Commander of an Infantry Battalion in the Ghana Army. Further, he was Assistant Director Army Operations at the Army Headquarters, and also as Aide de Camp (ADC) to the Army Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Dr. Ayawine has done many military courses including the United Nations Staff Officers Course in the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College (Hamburg), the Senior Command and Staff Course and Junior Staff Course both at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the Combat Team Commanders Course and the Medium Mortar Commanders Course both at the Army Combat Training School among several other military courses.
He has wide experience in international relations especially with respect to Peace Support/Peacekeeping Operations. He is a decorated peacekeeper with over 10 tours of duty in 5 UN peacekeeping missions across the world among which are Chief Intelligence Officer at the Force Headquarters of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA), a Senior Military Liaison Officer with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, deputy commander of the VIP Protection Guards in the United Nations Mission in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI), Personal Staff Officer to the Western Brigade Commander in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Congo (MONUSCO), and as a Platoon Commander and subsequently a Military Intelligence Officer in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
Dr Ayawine has several academic qualifications to his credit. These include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Ghana, a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Democracy, Governance, Law and Development from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and a Doctor of Political Economy from the Swiss Management University. Aside these, he also possesses several academic certificates including a Post Graduate Certificate (Human Resource Management), Post Graduate Certificate (Project Management), a certificate in Defence Management, a certificate in Conflict and Crises Management, a certificate in Peace Operations and a certificate in Exclusive Economic Zone Management from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.
Dr. Ayawine is also involved in academia. He has served as Adjunct Lecturer on subjects including Development Issues in Ghana, Public Administration, and Ethics at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), as well as Adjunct Lecturer on Development Administration and Conflict Studies in Africa in the University of Ghana. Previously he lectured International Affairs at the Ghana Military Academy. `He has researched and published widely principally on United Nations Peacekeeping/Peace Support Operations.
